Local businesses in Røros

Several sources show that Sámi reindeer herders supplied the town's population with reindeer materials. Besides reindeer meat, this involved materials like hides, reindeer hair, bone and antlers. Throughout the 1900s, materials from reindeer became important resources for both family enterprises and the local businesses in Røros.

The profitability of the cornerstone company Røros Copper Works varied. Many people therefore looked for other ways to earn money, and some started their own small-scale businesses. A common feature of these businesses was the exploitation of local resources. This included the materials provided by the Sámi.

In the 1930s, the reindeer antler company Røros Reinhornindustry was established. Later, it changed its name to Røros Lærvarefabrikk (leatherware factory). It developed products made of both reindeer antler and bone. Everything from lamps, ashtrays, holders for matches and cigarettes, nutcrackers, corkscrews and different types of knives were made. Reindeer hide was used for knife sheaths. The materials were procured either directly from the Sámi reindeer herders, or through buyers.

Røros suvenirer A/S was established in 1958 and developed more than 50 different souvenir products for sale, all made of reindeer antlers. Certain types of knives were particularly sought-after. As much as ten tonnes of antlers could be used in production per year.

The Skanckesmia smithy, in operation from 1931 until 1976, also used reindeer antlers in some of its products. A metal bottle opener shaped like a reindeer, with a handle made of reindeer antler was particularly popular. However, reindeer antler was used for other products that required shafts or handles, too.

The great demand eventually made it difficult to procure enough materials locally. Reindeer antlers were therefore also bought from other parts of Saepmie (the Sámi cultural region).

Krog ullvarefabrikk (woolen factory), formerly housed in the building you are currently standing beside, is another example of local businesses exploiting materials from reindeer. The textile industry went into a sharp decline in the early 1950s, and turned to the development of new products. For the woolen factory in Røros, the sleeping bag ‘Bamse’ became an important product. The sleeping bag was filled with a mix of reindeer hair and sheep's wool.

Today, local businesses still use materials provided by Sámi reindeer herders, particularly reindeer meat. Fjellvilt, Stensaas Reinsdyrslakteri and Rørosrein are examples of this type of industry in the municipality.
